Out of Camp Trips

Day Trips

For many campers, our out-of-camp trips are the highlight of their Cheerio experience. Since the Blue Ridge Mountains and many other points of interest are all within a short distance to camp, our campers take advantage of these exciting day excursions. The Cheerio trips listed do cost an additional fee.

Canoeing on the New River

Canoeing down the New RiverFor campers 10 years of age and older, this is a chance to set out on a real, outdoor adventure. The Virginia section of the New River, ironically the oldest river in North America, is the site for our most popular day trip. Enjoy a day on the water witnessing some of our country's most scenic areas.

Carowinds

Cheerio charters a tour bus, leaving camp early in the morning, to travel to one of the South's premiere, well-known theme parks near Charlotte, N.C. Campers have lunch at the park and explore the many thrilling rides, roller coasters and entertainment areas offered at Carowinds. For safety, campers break up into small groups on this trip with one counselor accompanying each group.

Caving and Climbing Trips

Explore nearby cavesLed by our experienced Adventure Camp staff during the two week session, these trips provide campers the opportunity to explore and test themselves in the out-of-doors. Nearby caves and rock climbing sites are used for these exciting excursions. Campers must be 11 to participate in the Caving Trip and 13 to participate in the Climbing Trip.

Afternoon Trips

Cabins will frequently choose to do an out-of-camp trip. What an exciting way to spend the afternoon! Many of these trips are a great way to explore the natural beauty of the area. Campers have the opportunity to enjoy one of America's largest national parks... the Blue Ridge Parkway. After stopping at a few scenic overlooks, campers might hike the trails along the Parkway or simply picnic together at Doughton Park. Another favorite out-of-camp excursion is rocksliding at Stone Mountain State Park complete with a delicious picnic supper.
