Ready . . . aim . . . FIRE! Cheerio is proud to offer safe, quality archery, riflery and skeet shooting programs to its summer campers.
Archery boasts a newly-completed, sheltered range complete with four shooting "bays." Targets may be placed at different distances to provide a challenge for even the more experienced archer. Straight-limb, recurve, and compound bows are used, as campers are taught the fundamentals of safety, nomenclature, scoring, and technique.
Our riflery range, also a sheltered structure, comes complete with 10 meticulously maintained .22 caliber rifles.. Safety has always been, and will continue to be, of critical importance. All campers, wearing appropriate ear protection, follow strict range commands given by properly trained staff members. Younger campers participate on our BB Gun Range before graduating to .22’s.
And for our oldest campers, Cheerio offers skeet shooting at one of the most modern, beautiful range facilities in all of resident camping. Our sheltered facility, overlooking the valley below, gives campers many opportunities to sharpen their skills. Complete with three automatic launching devices, allowing both single and multiple targets, campers take careful aim in an attempt to hit flying "clays." Three .20 gauge, pump-action shotguns are used, which are cleaned and inspected daily. Again, supervision and safety is paramount.
Softball, volleyball, basketball, football, and soccer are just a few of the team sports offered at Cheerio. Each team sport is taught with an emphasis on improving skills, learning the rules of the game and working together as a group.
Facilities for these and other athletic sports include an all-weather gymnasium with two basketball courts and one volleyball court as well as three well-maintained athletic fields with permanent goals and backstops.
Tennis has always been a favored activity for both boys and girls and camp. Our tennis complex has four composition courts and well-maintained, modern equipment. Instruction centers around drills, practice play and round-robin tournaments. Intermediate players, advanced players and those who have never picked up a racket before are all welcome.
Cheerleading and Tumbling
Need to improve your coordination, strength and flexibility? Cheerio offers training for these and other agility activities. We begin by learning techniques for simple moves (forward and backward rolls) and progress to more advanced (round-offs, hand-springs, and stunts). Fully trained counselors are always present to spot campers on official gymnastic safety mats.
Professional-grade ping pong and foosball tables are the big draw for this popular activity. Campers meet in the "Loft" to sharpen their hand/eye coordination in both one on one matchups and round-robin tournaments.
