Climbing/High Ropes Course
For campers who want the ultimate challenge, Cheerio offers an extensive
climbing program. While utilizing one of our two 40-foot climbing towers or our 45-foot "Giant Swing," campers challenge themselves every inch of the way.
On the towers, all participants are educated thoroughly in both climbing
safety and techniques. Campers, wearing a helmet, are harnessed and hooked into a belay system.
Campers participate in "challenge by choice." That is to say, all campers determine
their own routes and goals while climbing.
The High Ropes course will challenge campers ages 10 and above to go outside
their comfort zones. Campers will be 30 feet in the air (Harnessed of course!) and negotiate their
way through a variety of events ending with a “Leap by Choice” activity which is sure to
get their heart pumping and help them feel great about their accomplishments.
The Giant Swing is guaranteed to get your heart going! The Giant Swing is offered
to all campers in climbing. The entire class pulls one camper (strapped into both a hip and chest
harness) up forty-five feet into the air and then - weeeeeeeeeeeeeee - let him or her fly!
Climbing to the top of these towers, or being hoisted to the top of a swing, is not
only a thrill - it's a real test of agility, balance and courage.
Horseback Riding
Cheerio has 18 camper-friendly horses, beautifully maintained stables and a full-time
equestr ian staff. We welcome beginning, intermediate and advanced riders and teach both Western and
English styles.
Classes are taught in our riding ring high atop the mountain. For those who want to
explore the incredible scenery, trail rides are offered every session. Helmets are provided as every
rider must wear one. Unlike many camps, there is no additional cost to take horseback riding.
Backpacking and Hiking
Cheerio's prime location in the Blue Ridge mountains makes for some truly
outstanding backpacking and hiking. The scenery here is breathtaking. We access both the trails on
camp's property, as well as those on the 13,500 acres of adjacent Stone Mountain State Park.
A camper's training may include map and compass skills, the fundamentals of putting
up a tent, wilderness ethics, and survival techniques. The older campers wanting to put their skills
to the test are offered an overnight trip to Stone Mountain State Park.
