New River Outdoor Center
The New River Outdoor Center (NROC), located on the banks of the New River near Mouth of Wilson, VA, serves as the base camp for Cheerio Adventures. This 60-acre site encompasses nearly a mile of riverfront along the second oldest river in the world. Base camp provides ample toilet, shower and sleeping facilities for participants' comfort between trips and boasts ample space for trip orientation and group interaction. While at the NROC each group has two large 14’X16’ platform tents - one each for the boys and the girls - who are accompanied by their staff leaders.
Equipment
Cheerio Adventures provides the majority of the equipment needed for their adventures:
tents, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, life jackets, backpacks, canoes, bicycles,
cooking and eating supplies, water bottles, and lots more. Participants may
bring their own equipment. Camp staff will evaluate the appropriateness of personal
gear on the first night. If it is found to be inadequate, Cheerio Adventures
will simply issue the equipment needed. Cheerio Adventures is not responsible
for any damage or loss of personal equipment. Participants will receive a detailed
packing list and itinerary. Please note: Participants on Explorer
Trips will need to furnish some of their own equipment.
History of Cheerio Adventures
Cheerio Adventures was established in 1982 as “Adventure Camp” a program of YMCA Camp Cheerio. Its purpose was to introduce young people to wilderness and adventure activities. That summer 34 young people participated on the trips. Since that time, the name has been changed to “Cheerio Adventures” and has grown into a year-round wilderness tripping program. In 1997 Cheerio Adventures served approximately 600 participants through advertised trips and custom group trips. Throughout the years our philosophy has remained the same: To provide a quality adventure experience in a Christian atmosphere.
