Summer Camp Jobs

Trip Leaders

Applicants should be 20 years and older or a rising sophomore in college for this wilderness tripping program featuring backpacking, canoeing, mountain biking, rock climbing, rafting and caving. Experience in one or more of these areas is required. These are eight week positions beginning the third week in May (with a three week unpaid staff training) and ending the first week in August.  Responsibilities alternate from leading adventure programs for youth to in-camp duties.

While in the field, this position requires trip leaders to work together in a coed atmosphere with their group.  Also the trip leaders need to be a positive role model to the campers and provide an avenue for the campers to grow physically, spiritually and mentally. The programs can range from 3 days to 2 weeks in length and the age group of the campers are from 10-17.  Trip leaders also lead trips for other contracted groups that bring their own leaders such as church groups, families and other YMCA's that want an adventure experience.  Trip leaders must have some prior experience working with youth preferably in a camp or similar setting.  Applicants must be in good physical shape and able to hike and backpack long distances with 40-60 lbs of weight in their backpacks.  Being able to run/jog three miles is incredibly helpful to access your fitness level.

 

Trip Coordinators
Heading out for some kayaking fun Applicants should be 21 years or older. This position requires a good driving record, self-starter, organizational skills, ability to adapt to change, and ability to work with others. Must have skills in some of the following areas: backpacking, canoeing, caving, mountain biking. Working under the Director, Assistant Director and Program Director, his/her responsibilities are supervising staff, supervising activity sites, checking in and out of gear, maintenance of gear, providing transportation, helping with various in-camp duties and organizing/supervising programs.

 

Spring and Fall Employment

Outdoor/Adventure Education Instructors
Cheerio also hires Outdoor/Adventure Education Instructors for its fall and spring programs. These positions are for qualified college students or graduates. Spring employment runs from mid-March through late May. Fall employment runs from early September through mid-November. Staff will work with various types of youth, leading school groups on hikes, canoe trips, high and low ropes courses, general games sessions, and other activities. You will also have the opportunity to work with conference groups on weekends.

Pay Scale

Pay varies by position and experience. Trip leaders begin at $290 per 6 day week D.O.E.  Salary for Trip Coordinator position is based on the credentials brought to the job. Outdoor/Adventure Education Instructors are paid $300 per 5-day work week.

All of the above positions include room and board, as well as laundry.
